Craft Racing Wheels: CS Series

Next Generation Carbon Spoked Wheels

The Craft Racing Wheels are the first of a new generation of carbon spoked racing wheels. Ultra-light disc brake specific rims that were designed from the ground up to take advantage of carbon spokes. Most carbon spoked wheels on the market lace a regular rim to their carbon spokes leaving a lot on the table in terms of wheel system optimisation and performance. The result? Shockingly light wheels. The CS4045 wheels with a 40mm deep front wheel and 45mm deep rear wheel tip the scales at a claimed 1180g. (Ours clocked in at 1176.3g for the pair.) There’s no cutting corners either. We’re talking about fat 29mm external rim width, hooked and fully tubeless or clincher compatible.

How do they do it?

So how do you make a sub 1200g disc brake wheelset? A lot of high modulus carbon, exotic alloys and a unique patented design. When you stare through the clearcoat of the rim and see the beautiful carbon construction of the rim, it’s hard not to be impressed. The hubs are equally awe-inspiring. The 7075-T6 aluminium has clearly spent a long time being CNC’d into the art piece that it is. The obsession with weight is clear when you see the dimples drilled into the freehub body. If that wasn’t crazy enough, further weight was reduced by removing half of the disc brake rotor splines. Fear not – disc brake splines are mostly for locating. If you tighten the lock rings to spec, most of the braking force doesn’t go through the splines. This is the obsession with details taken to create these wheels.

Performance Driven

While weight is a huge part of performance, it’s not everything. Aerodynamics and stiffness are a key part of the equation. The carbon spokes of the CS series are especially thin to help them slice through the air. Furthermore, they’re locked in place at both ends to prevent them rotating into an un-aerodynamic position. With just 16 spokes on the front wheel there’s also a big reduction in aerodynamic drag and weight.

Many people wonder if 16 spokes are enough to deal with the huge braking forces of a disc brake front wheel. However, consider that both sides of the wheel are cross-laced spokes. This means 8 of the spokes are handling the load. Compare this to a 21-spoked wheel that uses 2:1 spoke lacing. Such a wheel only has 7 spokes doing most of the load transfer.

It’s just another example of how the wheels have been optimised to take advantage of carbon spokes and increase performance.

Front wheel, Rear wheel, pre-installed tubeless tape, and tubeless valves, Each wheel also comes with a wheel build card with the spoke tension of each spoke, the serial number of the rim and hub, and the roundness and flatness measurements. Each card is signed and dated by the craftsman who built the wheel.

Warranty

Each wheelset comes with a two-year limited warranty that covers manufacturing defects. It does not cover the wheels from misuse or accidental damage. If you do accidentally damage your wheels, get in touch with us with your proof of purchase and we will asses the damage and find a solution to get you back on the road as quickly and cheaply as possible.

Weight Limits

The wheelsets have a 100kg weight limit. This is the system weight limit and includes rider, bike and any luggage. We test above and beyond these weight limits but users should not exceed these limits.

Frequently Asked Questions

What freehub body options are there?

We have freehub options to make your wheelset compatible with Shimano 11/12s, Campagnolo or SRAM XDR options.

What bearings do the wheels use?

The wheels use high-quality ceramic hybrid bearings. The freehub body bearings are 6802, the other 4 bearings are 6902.

Which wheels are best for me?

If you like to use wider tires (28mm and above) with lower pressures, we recommend the CS5060 wheels. If you run 25mm tires we recommend the CS4045 or CS5055 wheels depending on whether you want to be optimised for weight or aerodynamics respectively.

Are the decals removable?

No. The decals are under the clearcoat and are non-removable.

What happens if I break a spoke?

The carbon spokes have a tensile strength much greater than traditional steel spokes, so the likelihood of breaking a spoke is very low. In the rare instance you do break a spoke, contact us with photos of the damage and we can supply replacement spokes and installation instructions.

CRW Works

Brand Name: CRW Works Chinese Company Name: 厦门铠富特运动科技有限公司
Founded: 2021 # of Employees: 5-10
Headquarters: Xiamen, Fujian Products Categories: Wheels
While unknown in the west, Craft Racing Works (CRW) have been quietly building wheelsets for other companies since 2015. They launched their own brand in 2018 and in 2020 started designing their own hubs. They’re a small team who pay attention to the details. They put an emphasis on the performance of the wheelset as a whole as opposed to individual components. They often experiment with new technologies such as Berd spokes and aren't afraid to try new things. As a new brand with a limited number of wheels out on in the wild, it's hard to give them a rating for durability or longevity. As always, early adopters take the risk of being a guinea pig, but the advantage is that you get a great performing wheelset at a great price before the brand raises prices due to the overheads of being a larger brand. There is a manufacturer's warranty with the wheels, so that does provide some peace of mind.

I’ve got them set up with 28mm tires running about 65psi the same as all my road bike wheels.
There’s a lot of bullshit talked about how wheels feel harsh or flexy and to be honest I can’t tell any difference between the wheels I have so I’m super happy with them because they do nothing they shouldn’t.
Spoke tension and trueness is all spot on and the finish of the carbon is beautiful.
Also the free hub will swap between DT 240 hubs with no problems. (Makes swapping wheels between bikes a bit easier).
It hasn’t been very wind when ive used them but so far the 50mm on the front hasn’t caused any stability problems.

Ok, I’ve had these now for a few weeks and ridden them on several different kinds of rides, so I think I’m ready to post some feedback.

Before I get into the wheelset, I need to say that I imagine I’m not the only one feeling a little nervous about slapping down this much money on a brand new website for an overseas order. That said, Joe and his team were absolutely amazing during this process, from beginning to end. I had some questions before I placed the order, and Joe immediately responded to my email. I did pay the extra money for expedited shipping (worth it IMO), and the wheels arrived seven days after I placed the order, and I was able to track them daily. So thanks Joe and the PandaPodium team – you’re crushing it. Keep up the great work.

Ok, the wheels: Firstly, the weight is just insane. It takes a minute for your brain to process what you’re seeing with what you’re feeling when you first pick them up. But the build quality is so solid, I just didn’t have any hesitations about durability.

I’ve done a few zone 2 rides, one with no wind, and one with moderate wind, a 2 hour threshold interval ride with simulated races with the team, and a 1 hour V02 interval ride, along with a couple of cafe rides. I live in a very, very flat region with lots of wind, and so on the first ride, I felt the front wheel twitching a bit. After that first ride, I haven’t felt it, and I’ve had more wind. I think they just take a little getting used to in that regard.

The most noticeable characteristic about these wheels is just how quick they are to accelerate, from any speed. Standing still to 30kph, 30-50, 50-65… no matter what, it just feels like you have a rocket strapped to your back. At one point during one of our race sims, with about 5km to go, I attacked coming out of a corner from about 5 wheels back, and just heard, “Ohhhh sh$%&#@!” When I finally dared to look back at the gap, I’d put 60 meters on the group. They caught me eventually, of course, but not right away. This is something I’ve not been able to do before now. In other words, the difference here wasn’t fitness – it was the wheelset, I’m convinced.

TLDR: Having owned them for a few weeks, I can say these are the best wheels I’ve ever been on, by a large margin. I highly recommend them, and I highly recommend the website.

I thought I would wait to post a review until I had put some kms into these wheels.
I have now put around 500/600km into these wheels.
I had my reservations initially as I was concerned about the stiffness as these are light wheels, and as I am generally around the 85kg mark in weight and also as someone who does weight training, I’m am not bragging but I can put some power out (not saying any numbers ;-).
My previous wheels were also Hyper D67’s which were also great and super stiff so I was using these as a bench mark.
Boy I was not disappointed!, these are fantastic wheels, no noticeable difference in stiffness compared to my hypers and the wheels came in at 1280g with the rim tape which is insanely light for wheels at this depth.
Yes I was also aware of the initial issues with these wheels but the Panda Podium Team answered all my question in good time which put my mind at ease, and yes I also had to wait for my set but it was well worth it!
Stop thinking about it and get in the queue for a set!

I bought these wheels in October and communication and shipping went smooth and quick.. thumbs up for that Pandapodium!

The wheels itself are above my expectations.. the weight is spot on as advertised 1285gram!
The build of the wheels and finish is beautifull, only the front bearings get gritty/dirty quickly.. minimal bearing sealing is the downside of having very smooth running bearings.. so better safe the wheels for good weather riding or just pay attention to servicing the bearings regularly.

I have approximately 500KM of riding with these wheels mainly in windy, wet Autumn conditions.. wheels handle beautiful in windy conditions, no problems at all for me (small guy 60Kg)
Overall the wheels are fast, stiff, light, responsive and surprisingly comfortable.. I think it has something to do with the low number of spokes compare to competitor wheels.

I highly recommend the wheels.. but rather don’t see other people buying these wheels.. because than I lose my advantage over others riders 😉

Let me start by stating that PandaPodium was fantastic throughout the sale process. I had all sorts questions(with no promise of purchase) answered quickly, they shipped me the wheels far faster than I should have expected, and they even accommodated my odd request to get gold decals instead of the black. (Apparently that’s still an option in China) The wheels have mostly been just what I was looking for. I have about 1000 miles on them now.

Pros: They are very rapid to accelerate. Getting started or changing speed has been snappy and responsive. They handle much better in crosswinds than I should be allowed to expect from a wheel this deep. Even on a bike with a super-short wheelbase and quick steering, and winds that started at 22mph and gusted to over 35, I found myself as steady and in-control as with a set of MUCH shallower wheels that I usually saved for days like this. I also get a lot less brake noise than I do with my steel spoked wheels, and that freehub is also very fast to engage. Handling has been rock-solid under my 170lbs, and I have been able to feel no more flex in them than in any other upper-end wheelset I have owned.(I worried about that given the low spoke count) I have not done any really long climbs on them yet, but they have been excellent on the rollers close to where I live, leaving me with no concerns about taking them on hillier routes or to the mountains in Colorado over the summer – unlike other deep-section wheels I have owned, these do not feel sluggish when gravity goes against me.

Cons: Minorly, the freehub can be really, really loud. I like a quiet bike, and unless I have recently put extra grease into the pawl mechanism I hate to freewheel around other people with these wheels. I’m hoping these bed in a little with age and quiet down like another star-ratchet hub I have.

Far more important, however, is that the bearings in the front wheel bind. (This is not a problem with the rear wheel) Given that they are touted as ceramic bearings, I had expected them to be super-smooth and spin well, but they don’t. In the hand, the front axle is actually pretty hard to turn, and on the stand with a little pre-load, the wheel still doesn’t spin well. A really hard spin by hand has resulted in under 30 seconds of spin before it comes to a complete stop, and there is enough binding that the valve will stop anywhere. Other wheels I have or have had(With Vision, Roval, LightBicycle, DT, Bitex, HED, Cannondale, and some old Campagnolo hubs) all spin for MUCH longer with the same kind of initial spin, and every single one of them will reverse direction at the end of its spin and swing back and forth a bit before coming to a halt.

I feel that this bearing stiffness contributes to the sensation that these wheels just don’t hold speed like I had expected deep wheels to do. Initially I had thought that the wheel was just tight from the factory and would settle in, but that has not happened. I haven’t gone out to purchase new bearings in the hopes of improving things yet, but I don’t think I’m far from that, and this just shouldn’t be an issue in a new set of wheels, especially at this price. Part of the reason I have not replaced the bearings yet is that I don’t know whether it’s the bearings alone, if the hub shell is too tight, or if the axle is a hair oversized.

Bottom line: They look fantastic, are comfortable to ride, handle well in all conditions, but bearing quality is not what it should be. Check your wheels carefully when they arrive – the consistency isn’t where it needs to be with these wheels yet.

Weight 1323 without lock ring or valves which is out of the 1290 +/- 2% which the Pp tech said if I remove the tape it will be within. My DT Swiss, SwissSide and Roval wheels all include rim tape in weights.

It seems many folks are having different QC issues each time and sometimes are very hard to find until after the fact.

I don’t think I can recommend a product I can’t confidently say has safe QC.

Magene EXAR 508db was what I was on the fence about. I’d probably send other that direction.

Been following Joe and his products for a while now, when his video came out about these wheels it caught my interest, Joe just seems like an honourable trustworthy guy so I bit the bullet and ordered them after the black decals became available. I can say that you don’t need to put 1000km on these wheels before you review them, as soon as you ride them you can feel that they are proper performance wheels, I am coming off DT Swiss 1400 Dicut 50mm with 240 hubs, which at the time of purchase was a great wheelset. I can with confidence say these CRW’s are better, firstly mine came up 1318g for the set which is within tolerance especially since they come with rim tape already installed and really well installed at that, even the valves seem like higher quality than normal. They are also really well packaged, I managed to fit a brand new set of Pirelli PZERO Race TLR in 28th without the need for a compressor, the freehub sound is as similar to a Chris King hub with that angry bee sound, not that it maters but the freehub sound on these is probably my favorite. In South Africa the roads aren’t amazingly smooth and I found that these wheels just roll super smoothly over rough tar and roll like hell, I can feel that they accelerate faster then the DT Swiss and they just feel so fast, it’s hard to explain, I am running them at 4bar front 4.5 back at 75kg.

The carbon in the wheels looks amazing especially in the sun, initially I wasn’t crazy about the more satin/gloss finish over matt but they actually look really good.

I would absolutely recommend them and my overall buying experience was really good, thanks to Tom for answering my questions.

I ride those wheels for three months and they are really great. They replace the roval rapide that came with my sl8, are lighter, stiffer as aero (they have nearly identical profile) and a lot cheaper than a pair of wheels that is defined for many as the best available wheels. So for me, it’s a no-brainer, I definitely recommend this product. What was remarkable is that I was able to sell my roval rapide second hand for more than those wheels, so I actually won money and performance.
I recommend 30c tires on the CS5060 wheels, they bring a lot of comfort and remain a perfect aero profile. To be picky, the finish is not as good as a pair of campagnolo bora i have, but still good.

These wheels are great! I’ve put about 1500 km and they feel very similar to the ENVE SES 4.5 (3rd generation with 25mm inner rim width), even in the way they deal with crosswinds, but these are much lighter! The packaging is the best I’ve seen so far. Setting them tubeless with conti 5000 STR tires was very easy with a normal floor pump. I’ll probably sell the ENVE 4.5s, I think that says it all. The customer service from Panda Podium was also excellent.

Have owned them Since October last year and done approximately 10,000km on them in rainy season here in Singapore.

I had some issues with the bearings to begin with but once they were changed they have been flawless. Super fast and responsive – Great with a set of Tubeless GP5000s on – They have been so good infact I purchased another pair of the 6075s and they have been great as well.

Highly recommend getting these if you like to race your bike fast and want to be comfortable as well.

Wheels could use better quality control for sure, I live in the literal desert (Phoenix, AZ) and all the wheel bearings have gone bad about 6-7 months into ownership. I have never ridden in the rain in my life. They are great wheels, tons of compliments and they are light and fast but …. I should not be replacing ceramic bearings this early. I will say that I have been getting reimbursed by panda podium and the service is great. I do not like the feeling of spending this much to be rebuilding wheels this early. Ive spent $300 on wheels from Amazon and had less maintenance to be honest. My frustration would have me rate a 1-2 star, however, when these are out of the box and working, they are wonderfully light and fast. I feel like its important for folks to know the experience I am having.

Love this wheelset and love customer service from Panda Podium! Honestly, these wheels are super fast and super light. If you equate this wheelset to that of a Western brand, it would be $1000+ more. Great value for a great product!
